Match your business with your interest … or do not start
As stated before, one of the most difficult things about starting a business is to decide WHAT type of business to begin. You may have heard that there is big money in this industry, or in that industry. That maybe be true – but that does NOT mean those industries should be tackled by you. My 93 year old dad always told me: “Do what YOU enjoy, do not go where you believe the money is”. Someone later added “the money will come naturally, if you do what you are good at, and enjoy”.
Now this is what I refer to as a “law of nature” – a universal truth. It is so simple, and obvious, that we tend to forget or ignore it. I have been in many conversations (usually around a BBQ), where the debate is what is “hot” and what is “not”. A participant will boast about their expert / inside knowledge about what the greatest business is to enter. They say “You have to enter this market. They are printing money. You cannot go wrong”. I do not know about you – but I do not want to enter many of those industries mentioned. And NO amount of money will entice me into that industry. Why not, you may ask? Don’t you want to make (print) money? Why are you so stubborn, to not want to go where milk and honey is there for the grabbing?
If the industry does not turn me on, if it is not part of my interest field, I WILL not go there. I want to be where I feel comfortable, where my intellect and interest are in harmony. I know I will spend most of my time in my business, I will take on many challenges – so I want to be HAPPY whilst “slogging” away. I refuse to prostitute myself – doing things I do not enjoy – just for the money. I realise I am not the norm, that many others have, and will in future, do anything for money.
I have given you my advise. But YOU have to decide what business to start. Will it be one that “prints money” or one that makes you happy, one that matches YOUR interest, skills and aptitude? Both may be very successful, but one will also make you extremely happy and content. I am glad to report that I have chosen the latter. I am passionate about business and entrepreneurship. I enjoy coaching people, pushing their boundaries, getting them to achieve their very best. Nothing as rewarding as a coachee telling me many years later about the value I added to their life, and business. I am blessed with the gift of identifying a person’s real potential and making them achieve their very best.
